It's been several weeks and he's not eating as he's done before.
He'll eat other things, but not his food. We've been in touch with
his vet and she says it's normal. She said to put down the food,
leave it for 20 minutes and then toss it if he doesn't eat. Does
anybody else have any other ideas?

Personally with mine food has always been down all the time and she's slim,
she eats when she needs to always knowing it's there and doesn't have to
gorge. It was a theory I put into practice and my fiance's parents followed
my theory and it's also worked for their cross Alsation/mastif. We both feed
dry food btw :)

My only other thought is "why should I eat normal food when if I wait long
enough I get treat food" :o)

Try making a game out of food (if it's dry food) pick a bit up like its a
treat, get dog excited, throw food to dog or roll accross floor, my 12½ yr
old still loves this :)

our lab had something similar
occasionally would not eat
we left the food out
mostly lab would eat half a day later after encouragement
i think your vet's advise is right

My Cheyenne did the same thing. She still sometimes does it. I would have
to play games with her so she would eat. I would hand feed her, dry
food...I would make trails on the floor with the food and now she throws her
cube at me so I'll fill it with her food and she'll eat. She's 12 1/2 now.
Happy Day,
Bettina & Cheyenne
